What Is PBIS?

Improving student academic and behavior outcomes is about ensuring all students have access to the most effective and accurately implemented instructional and behavioral practices and interventions possible.  PBIS provides an operational framework for achieving these outcome.  More importantly, PBIS is not a curriculum, intervention, or practice, but is a decision making framework that guides selection, integration, and implementation of the best evidence-based academic and behavioral practices for improving important academic and behavior outcomes for all students.

What Does PBIS Emphasize?

PBIS emphasizes four integrated elements:

  1. Data for decision making
  2. Measurable outcomes supported and evaluated by data
  3. Practices with evidence that these outcomes are achievable
  4. Systems that efficiently and effectively support these practices

Implementation with Fidelity

Schools that establish systems with the capacity to implement PBIS with fidelity and sustainability have teaching and learning environments that are:

  • Less reactive, averse, dangerous, and exclusionary
  • More engaging, responsive, preventive, and productive
  • Address classroom management and disciplinary issues
  • Improve supports for students
  • Maximize academic engagement and achievement for all students

In the 2014-2015 school year four schools, Lindeman Elementary School, Miles Elementary School, Tichenor Middle School, and Lloyd Memorial High School, were recognized for their implementation of PBIS with fidelity.

In the 2015-2016 school year all six schools, Arnett Elementary School, Howell Elementary School, Lindeman Elementary School, Miles Elementary School, Tichenor Middle School, and Lloyd Memorial High School, were recognized for their implementation of PBIS with fidelity.
