Director of District Wide Programs

Dorothy Howell’s student handbook is being issued with each child on their first day of school. These handbooks, along with multiple other flyers, contain most of the information that you will need to know about our school’s policies and procedures. It is important that parents complete all of the information contained and return it to school in a timely manner. It is also important that this information is updated at the school level whenever there is a change to any information.

Breakfast Program: Breakfast is served every morning beginning at 7:30 AM. Students that wish to participate should be at school in time for breakfast to be eaten and be to class by 8:00 AM.  Breakfast is free of charge to every Howell student.

Lunch: Lunch is also served daily for your child dependent upon their class’s lunch schedule. We encourage all parents to join their student for lunch whenever they are able to, please see your teacher about their lunch schedule. For additional information regarding  menus or cafeteria related items, please visit
Family Income forms can be completed either pencil paper or online. Only one application per family needs to be completed each year. These forms should be filled out as soon as possible even if dont think your family would qualify for assistance.  This should be done immediately in order to help the school offset the cost for each student.

Medication: We are not permitted to administer medication of any kind to any student, unless proper forms have been completed by your doctor. These forms may be picked up in the school office to be taken to the doctor.

Office hours: The office opens at 8:00 AM and is closed at 3:30 PM each school day.

Student Attendance: The school day begins at 8:00 AM and concludes at 3:00 PM. For the safety of your child, no students should be on campus prior to 7:30 AM when the doors open. On a daily basis, any child arriving to school after 8:00 AM will be marked as an unexcused tardy and will need to be signed in by the parent.
If your child is ill and will be absent from school, it is required that you call the office at 727-1108 to report the absence before 9:00 AM. For your convenience you may leave a message of an absence prior to 8:00 AM at extension 10.
Students who are absent will be allowed 2 parent notes each quarter, per the attendance policy. After three days of consecutive absence, a doctor’s note will be required in order for the absences to be counted as excused. Any parent notes must be submitted within five business days of the absences in order to be recorded as excused. After more than three unexcused absences your child’s name will be submitted to the Erlanger-Elsmere School District Director of Pupil Personnel for truancy.

Dismissal Procedure: Dismissal time is 3:00 PM. Students who are designated as riders will be dismissed first followed by students designated as walkers. All riders will be given an identification number which must be produced when picking up the child at the main entrance loop to the building, using Buckner. For the safety of our students, we will not allow students designated as riders to walk to a car not in the rider pick up loop. Drivers not in possession of a car rider tag will need to produce identification and be cross referenced to the allowed pick up list maintained in the office. Drivers are expected to follow all traffic laws and show courtesy to all, those in violation will be reported immediately to the Elsmere Police Department.
Walkers will be dismissed from the exit on the Central Row side of the building once a majority of riders and traffic have cleared out. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to meet their students at the exit doors to help their students in walking home. As with any school grounds, smoking is not permitted on the premises.  Parents designating their children as walkers should not be parking and waiting in their cars on any of the surrounding streets. This causes safety concerns with students and traffic. Those who are witnessed to these actions will be reported to the Elsmere Police Department.
Students are expected to be picked up or released at 3:00 PM. Every attempt will be made after 3:00 PM to contact parents if a child has yet to be picked up. If a child remains at school past the time of dismissal and no contact can be made, a report will be filed.

After School: Those in need of afterschool care for their children may contact the YMCA. The YMCA services students until 6:00 PM each evening. For more information regarding the YMCA after school program, please contact Dale Logue at
