EES student receives scholarship at MLK Day luncheon
Guests gathered to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King were reminded of his remarkable legacy and hope for the future at the Northern Kentucky Branch NAACP Branch Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Outreach Luncheon.
The Northern Kentucky Branch of NAACP presented scholarships to students graduating from Northern Kentucky high schools and presented the Annual Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Education Partner Award, Dr. King Corporate Award and Keeper of the Dream Award, Vision and Unity Award, Community Impact Award, and Presidents Award.
Desia Hall, a senior at Lloyd Memorial High School, was the recipient of a scholarship at the luncheon. She plans to attend either South Carolina State, Jackson State, or Murray State University and major in Sports Medicine.
"Desia was chosen for her hard work and dedication to her academics, especially with her dual credit Gateway Health Care classes," said Ms. Jennifer Bird, school counselor at Lloyd. "We are very proud of her!"
The event was held at the Newport Syndicate. Dr. Veda Stewart, division director for the Division of Educator Recruitment and Development of the Kentucky Department of Education, was the keynote speaker.
Erlanger-Elsmere school board honored this month
As Kentucky observes School Board Recognition Month in January, Erlanger-Elsmere Schools is joining in the celebration.
Mr. Jeffrey Miller, Ms. Sarah Shackelford-Ross, Ms. Teresa Loman Hunter, Ms. Rachel Retherford, and Mr. Marvin Townsend are among the more than 850 school board members in the state’s 171 local school districts being recognized this month for their service. They are joined by Amy Moctezuma-Perez and Molly Hunt, the Board's 2022-2023 student representatives.
This is the perfect time to thank school board members for serving in a role that has become increasingly complex, said Ms. Davonna Page, president of the Kentucky School Boards Association and member of the Russellville Independent school board.
“Members of the Erlanger-Elsmere Board of Education are elected to shoulder important district decisions and to ensure the success of all students,” Ms. Page said. “Among other responsibilities, the local board oversees a multimillion-dollar budget, adopts policies based on ever-changing education laws, and closely monitors the strategic direction of the school system. All this while completing hours of professional learning and state-mandated training.”
“Our dedicated board team works to give every child in every classroom access to high quality teaching and learning,” said Mr. Chad Molley, superintendent of Erlanger-Elsmere Schools.
“Even in the face of new challenges, like rising costs and nationwide staffing shortages, our school board members never flinch to do what’s necessary for our district,” he said. “Our community should be very proud of this team."
Community donations make holidays bright
Each and every holiday season, our school district is touched by the generosity of our caring community as individuals, businesses, community groups, and churches step up to provide support to our students and families in need.
For example, this year, 64 students representing 34 families at Arnett Elementary and 59 students representing 28 families at Miles received assistance to ensure our students and their families enjoyed a happy holiday.
"Every family that reached out was able to receive assistance," said Ms. Shauna Kitts, Family Resource Coordinator at Arnett and Miles Elementary. "I am very fortunate that I had the help of so many sponsors that I did not have to turn anyone away!"
In total, 21 different sponsors -- including community partners such as the White Castle Factory in Covington & DHL, teachers and staff, the cities of Erlanger and Elsmere, and many other individuals -- made very generous donations of pajamas, new winter clothes, new shoes, and a variety of toys that fit student interests.
"The boxes were as tall as we were, and the truck was full," Ms. Kitts said. "A very conservative estimate of the value of our donated items would be approximately $20,000. None of this would have been possible without the help of our wonderful community, and I am so appreciative of everyone's commitment to our families!"
