Welcome Back for the 2026-2027 School Year
Hello, Erlanger/Elsmere Schools Families!
My name is Matt Engel, and after 27 years working in various roles in this district, I am proud to begin my first year as your Superintendent. We are so excited to welcome our students back for the first day of school on Tuesday, August 25th!
A few reminders:
School doors will open at 7:30 AM for breakfast
Instruction begins each day at 8:00 AM
All of our schools dismiss at 3:00 PM
The first days are always a bit hectic as everyone gets back into the routine of drop-offs and pick-ups, and we all realize there will be increased traffic around town and near our schools. I urge you to be patient, set that alarm clock a little earlier, and use caution around our school lots so we can all keep everyone safe.
Our district adopted a different calendar this year to provide our construction partners a couple of extra weeks to make progress on the large renovation project at Lloyd Memorial High School. This variable calendar is why we have started school so much later than we normally do. Those families with children attending Lloyd Memorial and Tichenor Middle will certainly see the massive changes on that campus, but in truth, all of our schools have gone through a multitude of construction upgrades over the summer. Our staff has been back in our schools full-time since August 13th, and they look forward to welcoming your children back next week.
As I have told all of our staff since I assumed this new role, I have high expectations of them, as I do of myself and our students. It is our shared responsibility–schools and families–to show up each day for our kids; to work hard each day; and to commit to the values of this district which focus on building communities of empowerment, growth and respect. Together, we can change and improve outcomes for all of our children.
Here’s to a fantastic school year…I cannot wait to see all of the great things our students are about to do!
Respectfully,
Matthew D. Engel
Superintendent

We are so excited to welcome you and want you to feel confident and prepared as your child begins kindergarten. Howell Elementary School and Lindeman Elementary School are hosting a Kindergarten Readiness Night just for you!
Please plan to attend the evening that works best for your schedule. You are welcome to join us at either session, even if your child will be attending Miles Elementary School or Arnett Elementary School next school year.
During the event, you’ll have the opportunity to visit a few interactive stations focused on key readiness skills: writing, reading, math, social-emotional development, and physical development. We recommend choosing the three stations that best support your child’s needs.
We look forward to meeting you!
Please see the attached flyers for additional details.

On behalf of the Erlanger-Elsmere Board of Education, I am thrilled to announce that they have officially selected our next Superintendent to lead the Erlanger-Elsmere School District.
After an extensive search process—which included reviewing a diverse pool of highly qualified candidates and incorporating the feedback the Screening Committee provided—the Board has appointed Mr. Matt Engel to this vital role.
The Board was particularly impressed by Mr. Engel’s deep commitment to our school district and its mission of providing the knowledge, skills, and opportunities our students need to realize their full potential and achieve lifelong success. They believe his vision aligns perfectly with the unique spirit of our district and our ongoing commitment to sustaining a community of empowerment, growth, and respect.
Mr. Engel will officially begin his tenure on July 1, 2026. In the coming months, we will work together on ensuring a smooth transition in leadership for the district and continue the collaborative work of shaping our district's future.
We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the Screening Committee for their work in the selection process. Their insights were instrumental in helping the Board make this decision.
Please join us in congratulating Mr. Engel. We look forward to this next chapter and the great things that lie ahead for our students, staff, and communities.
